Many people ask me what tools I use to write this blog. The primary one is MarsEdit by Red Sweater Software, and version 2.0 of it recently shipped. I’ve found, after MUCH looking, that MarsEdit is at the top of the heap of blog editors, so please check it out.

This is a very nice product…hopefully in the future they will release a Linux version of the product
Yes, but how about us losers on Windows? What’s the next best thing for offline blogging?

Does it work on iPhone? ‘cuz it’s the only Apple product I have…
I second (“third?”) Zack and Vlad. Would love to use this product if only Red Sweater made a Windows-compatible version.
Hey guys – this is Daniel Jalkut – developer of MarsEdit.
It’s great to hear all the wishes for a non-Mac version of the application. I have to say though, it’s not very likely. I’m CRAZY in love with the Mac, and it means that I love spending all of my time developing Mac applications.
The PC has a couple great options. I really recommend looking at BlogJet and Windows Live Writer.
BlogJet is written by cool Russians, and Live Writer is one of those “I can’t believe this was written by Microsoft” applications. Check them out.
Oh, and switch to the Mac :)
Red-Sweater Software is a Mac only company run by one guy. There won’t be a Windows version and there definitely won’t be a Linux version.
Daniel,
Many thanks for the tip. Just finished working with Windows Live Writer on my new blog project and already love it as a publishing tool — indeed a surprising gem from Microsoft.
Still wish I could use MarsEdit. Maybe one of these days when I spring for a MacBook :)
Appreciate the advice. And thanks to Guy for the post.
Guy, this is a fantastic blog. I read all your stuff :)
Guy,
What is your comment about FLOCK?
There’s something about this that’s like having that garage band when you were a teenager and always lusting after the latest effects pedal that will make you sound like Eddie Van Halen.
We really need a blog writer for mobile devices. For those of us in the run, having a PDA friendly editor would be great.
The Blog Editor could be really simple but it should have some basic functions:
1. – It would allow us to use pictures taken by those devices (3 step upload function)
2. – YouTube auto-upload function (similar to #1)
3. – Copy & Paste URLs
4. – Basic Formatting
5. – Posting (obviously).
Thoughts?

My main issue with MarsEdit is the fact that there’s no rich text editing. You have to type the HTML tags yourself. Well, I can get used to it, but I find it counterintuitive and time consuming. Would prefer having a solution that supports rich text editing AND all TypePad features like multiple categories, keywords and Technorati keywords. Still looking for one for my Mac.
Pahh…I forgot you were a Mac guy.
I’ll have to check out MarsEdit. I’m looking for a new blog editor.
Difficult to use/learn?
Ok. that was a dumb question – GK would never use anything difficult, right?!

I believe you have never seen ecto. That’s the only explanation as to why someone might say MarsEdit is actually really good. :-)
There have been a few people on this blog asking about mobile publishing and I just came across this new application which looks like a mobile version of Windows Live Writer. Im going to check it out now.
